FAQs

  • Pilates is an exercise technique developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, originally called Contrology. Pilates is the complete coordination of the body and mind. With consistent practice you will develop strong, lengthened muscles, tighten your core, and improve your flexibility, posture and balance. It’s a great form of exercise for people of all ages and fitness levels.

  • Pilates can help improve posture, balance, coordination, and overall body awareness. It can also help build strength and flexibility in the muscles, improve joint mobility, and reduce stress and tension in the body. It is low-impact fitness method that often complements other forms of exercise and activity that you do in your everyday life. Pilates is especially good for people with low back pain and other chronic pains or who have muscle imbalances. In short, Pilates is good for EVERYONE!

  • No props or equipment are needed for sessions at Sunflower Studio. In 1:1 sessions if you already have Pilates apparatuses or equipment we can certainly incorporate them into our time together. For group classes no props are needed but some are recommended. We suggest the following:

    * 2 lb weights (water bottles or soup cans can also be used)

    * Magic circle/Pilates ring

  • We offer virtual 1:1 sessions and group mat classes for all levels, including beginners!

    We recommend setting up a FREE 15 minute consultation with one of our instructors. That way you and your instructor can determine the best way for you to get started based on your individual goals and fitness level.

  • Pilates can be a great way to continue exercising even with physical limitations. However, it’s important to consult your healthcare professional before starting any new exercise program, including Pilates. If you have an injury or medical condition, please let us know before attending your session so we can provide modifications.

    If you are pregnant and have never done Pilates before, group classes are not recommended. Consider 1:1 sessions if you are pre or postpartum.

  • It is recommended that you practice Pilates 2-3 times a week to see tangible results. These sessions could be a mix of 1:1 sessions and group mat classes, just 1:1 sessions, or just group mat classes. It’s really up to you to create a schedule that works for your lifestyle!

  • Sunflower Studio prides itself on being a “high touch” classical Pilates studio and prioritizes providing individualized feedback during all group classes and 1:1 sessions. Therefore, the instructor typically WILL NOT demonstrate the exercises. The purpose of this is so the instructor can focus on delivering a high quality class and give specific corrections and adjustments to help clients improve their technique and form.

    Additionally, Pilates exercises can be complex and require a lot of mental focus and concentration. By not demonstrating the exercises, the instructor encourages students to tune in to their own body and movement experience, rather than simply copying what they see the instructor doing. This helps students develop a deeper mind-body connection and improves their overall Pilates practice.
